Windows 7 phone: My point of view

The first look at the windows phone 7 looked like a Microsoft's in for a major competition with the "interface king" the mighty apple of course. Since the launch of windows 7 phone in the market. People have been uploading articles and videos on the new phone's reviews and features and so on. But to see whether windows 7 is really a tough competition or not we need a systematic analysis of the points to be considered.

Following 3 are those aspects that will decide whether windows 7 phone has what it takes to grab the market's attention or is it just another phone.
  1. Interface
  2. Features
  3. Design

1) Interface: If we have a look in the past history of apple and Microsoft both right from the gui wars you'll notice that even though Microsoft did take the interface design idea from apple, they always had a different approach in their minds i.e. when apple's interface had a common window for all the programs running. Windows interface had a separate window opening for each programs allowing multitasking which apple took years to catch up and introduce multitasking in their OS. What I mean is Microsoft has this ability of foreseeing the requirements and giving the customers what they want rather than going out of the route and coming up with something more interesting but with much less utility value as compared to windows applications.

Multi touch: With the zune interface introduced in the windows 7 phone, Microsoft finally has a multi touch display after all.

Again Windows have entered into the world where apple is topping the list but have different things in minds. Instead of typical grid based app view which is now quite traditional is making it difficult for users to manage once the apps increase. Microsoft has come up with their own interface which displays 6 hubs: people, pictures, Games, music + videos, market place and office which looks very similar in fact is the Zune HD interface.

2) Features:

Xbox recently has proven it's ability as a gaming device providing user's of all ages an indulging gaming experience and now has let users experience this on their phones itself. Although games on Xbox and and the phone are going to be much different which is yet to be discovered on how the Xbox experience, Microsoft is working on reducing the gap between the two.

3) Design: the shiny design doesn't seem to appeal so much but when the iPhone first came out people immediately liked it, and this was not because of the design but the interface. So I think the interface that the phone has will out run its design.
